TENNIS
by Richard Rushfield

Running a close second to waterskiing, tennis in one of Timberlane’s most popular activities. In addition to Steve Lebau, a new instructor, Tom Easthouse, has been teaching kids the ins and outs of the game.

TIMBERLIFE: About what percentage of the kids at Timberlane are involved in the tennis program?

EASTHOUSE: Well, I’d say that roughly 45% of the campers take tennis each section of activities. During the four week session there is some switching from section to section, so about 55% of all campers have had some tennis experience.

TIMBERLIFE: Did you play tennis professionally before coming to camp?

EASTHOUSE: No, but I did play high school tennis.

TIMBERLIFE: What kinds of things do you concentrate on in teaching?

EASTOHOUSE: It all depends upon the level of the individual student. For beginners we teach the basics; forehand, backhand, serve, rules, etc. For intermediate and advanced players we concentrate much more on strategy and match play.

TIMBERLIFE: Do you have any competition with other camps?

EASTHOUSE: Yes we do. Starting this year we will compete against other camps in team matches. In addition, we also have in-camp tournaments almost every weekend. So the kids do not get a good share of competition while at camp.
