WHAT IS PRE-CAMP?
by Jon Heller

Most campers are not aware of just how much work and time goes into preparing the camp for the upcoming season. Major jobs such as raking, painting, installing the ski and swim piers, and cleaning out all of buildings require total effort and dedication from the staff.

Way back on May 6th, Don Shoppe cruised up to camp from Indianapolis and commenced his camping season. At that time, Don was surprised to see that there was still ice on Lake Towanda, and snow behind the radio station. Don was joined at camp by Owner-Director Mark Faiwell, and they proceeded to start the tedious job of getting the camp in shape.

On June 2nd, eight more staff member arrived and began the major work load. The painting crew, composed of Josh Taxman, Tom Callahan, Jon Heller, Bob Gassel, and Gary Gorchoff; repainted the buildings in the central area. To replace the blue trim, Timberlane instituted a rustic brown Northwoods color.

The installation of one of the Northwoods’ longest boardwalks was next on the agenda. While three people were stationed at the ski area, six others were busy carrying sections to the waterfront and floating them to where they would be received and installed. The project took an entire evening.

During this “pre-pre-camp” week, the staff was subjected to the testing of Dorothy’s new tidbits. As hard as she tried, Herlitz realized you cannot please all of the people all of the time.

June 9th saw the remainder of the staff arriving. Among them were three new counselors, Jeff Neri, Tom Easthouse, and Lonnie Rouben; and TIMBERLIFE wishes to acknowledge them. Also new this summer is our nurse, Holly Hughes, and assistant secretary, Linda Sosman. With more people in camp, jobs of a larger scale could be completed. This included the raking the leaves and setting up of individual activities.

Finally, on June 15th, the boys arrived from all over the nation and the 1979 Camp Timberlane season was underway!
