STAFF COMES HOME
By Robert Gassel

During the July 4th weekend celebration many former staff members visited camp. For those of you unfamiliar with them, here’s a bit about them.

Bob Pearlstein was the man responsible for beginning the Gymnastics department at camp. He started it in 1973. Ken Lorch was the waterfront director in the early 1970’s, and also an assistant director. Tom Herz was a camper for many years and a tennis staff member in 1976 and 1977. Scott Halperin, also known as Elmo, also attended as a camper. Scott worked two years as staff in Riflery. Jeff Gendleman was here only one summer, 1977, but he left his mark in both water-skiing and drama. Tony Hauser was our head sailing man for a number of years. His brother, Gus, also was a counselor. Marc Minkin was one of the top horseback riding campers and counselors for a number of summers. Glenn Fisher, though he doesn’t work at camp any more, still comes up often and occasionally works with the tripping department.

Randy Wynn also appeared here last week. Randy, of course, was the assistant director of camp in 1976. Prior to this, he worked for many years in water skiing; and was one of the handful of people from camp to make the Minocqua-Bat Water ski Team.

Probably the most welcome of all the former staff was Vance Liebman. One of the founders of radio station KTIM, Vance worked in many areas of camp. He was also an assistant director here for a couple of years. Vance holds the longevity record (for a non-Hiken) at Timberlane. He started here in 1961 and came to camp every year through 1975.

Harold Hiken maintains his practice of inviting any former counselor to visit camp whenever they wish.
