The 1978 Major League Baseball season has really taken hold of Camp Timberlane, It is hard to walk around camp at night and not hear radios in every cabin blasting a game.

The two teams which have really become the main attractions are the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. With large contingents from both cities; interest has been spectacular. Since both teams are fighting for their division titles, the results of each game are extremely important to the fans here at camp.

There has also been much debate among staff and campers alike about the teams. It is amazing to see young campers who don’t know their own address, be able to recite Larry Hisle’s statistics; or Bruce Sutter’s E.R.A.

The past couple of weeks have also brought along another baseball story, Pete Rose’s hitting streak. Each night, people waited with baited breath to hear whether Rose had extended the streak. When the string was finally broken at 44 games (12 short of the record), there was great debate between people who wanted him to break the record and those who didn’t.

Another favorite activity of the fans here is imitating the announcers they hear on the radio and television. Many people at camp think they do letter perfect imitations Jack Brickhouse, Merle Harmon, and Harry Carey.

Two other groups of fans with long histories of being loud and boisterous have had to cool it this season due to the poor performance of their teams. Fans of both the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox have had nothing more to do than alibi for their teams all summer.

As the season goes on, and teams drop out of the race, interest may wane. But there is that dream in the back of each mind of a Cub-Brewer World Series.
