One of the biggest events of the summer, so far, occurred last
July 22 when there was a special showing of the classic karate movie,
Enter the Dragon.
It had been raining for the previous few days, and on the morning of
the 22nd Harold Hiken decided that he needed something to lift the
spirits of the campers and staff alike. He called a couple of other
camps in the area, and finally found a film that would be perfect to
catch the fancy of the entire camp.
At breakfast, H announced that if the weather remained
poor, he would bring in a special movie. When assistant director Mark
Faiwell informed the camp that it was Enter The Dragon,
the place went up for grabs. The entire lodge exploded in cheers, the
loudest and longest to be heard here in a long time.
Later that afternoon, the biggest crowd to ever watch a movie at Camp
Timberlane (breaking the 1975 record held by
Frankenstein) gathered in the lodge to see the karate
film starring Bruce Lee. Just about every camper and counselor (many
of whom were off duty) showed up to watch and cheer the film.
Everyone was thrilled as they saw Lee breaking up a giant criminal
ring and revenge his sister's death at a martial arts
competition.
The film proved to be so popular that it was shown two more times in
the next day, for those who missed it or just wanted to see it once
again. Each of the return showings also drew large crowds.
Due to the great response to the movie, H allowed
Counselor-In-Training Steve Brattler to begin a limited karate class
for the campers.
