The Streak
As Michael Pierce prepares for his last year (he claims) at
Camp Agawak, let us pay tribute to a guy who went to camps in 4
decades...spanning 7 Presidents, 5 Grateful Dead keyboardists,
26 Jon Heller jobs, and no Chicago World Series
appearances.
MP...we're all envious.

CTM News Flash
News reports out of central Illinois quote unnamed sources as
stating that Jonathan 'Pud' Heller has secretly been training
for a return to the CTM Garbage Run. 'Pud' has supposedly been
working on a wrist strengthening excercise regimen in order to
prepare him for the difficult shifting maneuvers required to
operate the garbage run vehicle. The unnamed source quoted Mr.
Heller as stating that once he started working his wrist, he
got so excited he could only think of returning to the garbage
run, the one job he was truly happy with.
Additional reports state that John Marks has been working to
get down to his Timberlane era weight in order to join 'Pud' in
what would be an unprecedented all-star Garbage Run line-up.
Timberlane owner/operator Mike Cohen could not be reached for
comment.

Update...It is reported that Pud has turned down an opportunity
to participate in pre-camp garbage run maneuvers. This has not
dampened speculation that Pud still could be making a return
for the regular season.

Pud's Comeback
Do you really think that Pud, at the age of 41, can reach his
former glory? I think he would just embarass himself. Besides,
he's already had the most perfect storybook ending to his
career...slamming into a tree on his way out of last year's
reunion.

Further Pud speculation
I have made arrangements with Mr. Cohen to remove THAT tree in
the central area if and only if the Pudman renogotiates his
last contract. Times have changed though. His Pudness would be
required to get his ear pierced, as well as make some type of
attempt to get some dreadlocks.

Speaking of which...
Since we are on the topic of Ed Fried (not really, but you must
admit it makes a nice segue), I must relate the story of how I
almost accidentally killed Steve Suchy. One day Ed and I were
filling balloons next to the trailer for a Cruiser Day water
balloon fight. Suchy comes by and makes a smart-ass remark...so
from about 15 feet away I heave a balloon which hits him right
in the middle of the chest...the kid goes down like he was
shot, gasping for air...Eddie's rolling on the ground laughing
and I'm freaking out. A minute later Suchy gets up and says I
triggered an asthma attack, and that he could have died.
Imagine having to call his parents with that story...

If you think that would be stressful, imagine having to call
ALL the parents to tell them that their kids are taking
Rifampin due to a fatal case of meningitis (actually
meningococcemia) which just occurred at camp. But please don't
worry. And to believe that no one took their kid home. Amazing
trust.

similar but different
Gazoo - Actually, meningococcemia is disseminated infection in
the bloodstream by the same bug that more commonly causes
meningitis (inflammation of the linings of the brain). Not
quite the same disease.

John Lee Hooker
I had the unique opportunity to see the Boogie Man many times
in the Big Easy (most notably at Tipitina's). Not only did he
personally sign my record jacket--even though he didn't go
beyond the 7th grade--, but being an American History major at
Tulane (with a specialized concentration in the "Old South",
Civil War and Civil Rights periods), John Lee Hooker accepted
my invitation to come to one of my classes, and gave a very
insightful and candid perspective of life in the Mississippi
Delta region from 1920-40. He actually just took questions for
about a half hour after a brief synopsis of life in the Deep
South and an introduction from my professor. He was 64 at the
time and I was a very young 22. Suffice to say, he didn't bring
his guitar that day. Long Live The Healer!

QUOTE OF THE YEAR
Ya like them apples huh? Our former maid (Girdell Young, now
deceased) was also born in Clarksdale, Mississippi and
remembered a younger John Lee Hooker in those days. She used to
drink, smoke thick doobies and rock to JLH in my front seat
every time I drove her home.

Hooker in SF
And my one encounter with JLH came when he meandered onto the
stage at a Van Morrison concert here in San Francisco about 5
years ago. The musicians just kind of moved out of the way and
let him do his thing. He walks into the middle of a "G L O R I
A" and steps to the microphone and starts singing real slowly,
so much so that the band slows down with him. What a memory.
He's on state about 2 minutes then just disppears behind the
curtain. The moment is captured forever on the Van Morrison CD
"A Night In San Francisco".

Vacation Plans
In response to Lee's posting, as previously mentioned, The
Marks Family will be attending the shortened third week of
family camp at Camp Agawak from August 22-August 26. By the
way, my little boy Joey Marks was on the same soccer team this
spring as the owner of Camp Kawaga's kid. He was hard closing
me on sending my kids to Kawaga saying other ex-Timber alums
have jumped ship and are sending their kids to Kawaga. The
decisions we parents have to make these days are very difficult
indeed. By the way, I hear Billy throws a great family camp--
the moms can lay in the sun while the dads play golf and Pud
entertains the kids.
