MISC-MASH WHAT IF... ...the
producers had used the movie vocals from "Suicide is Painless"
in the TV opening.
THE DISH ON MULCAHY...
...George
Morgan, who played Father Mulcahy in the pilot, appears in almost every
episode. He is on the far left, with red hair and holding a hat. Also,
the woman to Hawkeye's right, with her hand on her hat, is Karen
Phillip, who played Lt. Dish in the pilot and a couple of first season
episodes.
THE
AMBULANCE SHOT...
For
decades fans
have questioned the shot of the ambulance pulling into the compound.
Full of dirt and scratches, it does not visually fit in with the rest
of
the open. Some have guessed that it is authentic Korean War footage,
while others have claimed it's a clip from the movie version of MASH.
Neither is true...
Most people remember the shot looking like this...
...but
in the pilot episode the shot was pristine.
What
happened?
Who knows? When the open
was re-edited after the pilot the shot somehow became damaged. This
damaged version was
used until MASH's final season, when the "clean" version was
re-inserted. Fast-forward to the late 1990's when the entire series was
remastered
by 20th Century Fox. The clean version was inserted into more, but
(curiously) not all episodes. For years this shot bothered the hell out
of me, but now when I see the clean version, it never feels quite
right...
